As the 2020/2021 season approaches the end, Lech Poznań has one more match to play – a home clash with Górnik Zabrze. Maciej Skorża’s squad will not only be fighting for three points, but also for a result that will bring some optimism to the fans and the club ahead of the summer break.
Lech Poznań is about to end the season being ranked far below the expectations. If things go well, the club from Greater Poland is going to finish the 2020/2021 campaign in the 9th position, but if the plan doesn’t work out, they’re going to drop down two places. Since the team has failed to achieve the objectives for this campaign, the last few games are considered an extension of the pre-season. The upcoming campaign will be a very special one for Lech as the team from Poznań is going to celebrate their 100th anniversary.
Maciej Skorża openly emphasised that there’s a lot of work to be done when it comes to the players’ mentality. After the recent clash with Wisła Cracow (2:1), Lech’s coach praised his squad for their attitude on the pitch. “First of all, I’d like to congratulate my players on a good match and how they performed mentally. We showed discipline and determination from the first minute,” said Skorża on the post-match conference and highlighted that it was the team’s best performance since he took over the squad.
The players themselves also acknowledge the importance and complexity of the process of rebuilding the team. “We all wanted to win the match knowing that we are going through a crisis and how it’s been impacting the atmosphere in the team. We lost credibility as a team and we didn’t want to wait until July when the next season starts to prove people wrong. We had a plan to start the match as well as possible, deliver a solid performance and win the game, and I believe everything went according to that plan. We need to maintain this direction and hopefully, next weekend when we finally get to play in front of our fans, we deliver similar performance and add another three points to our account,” emphasised Lech’s defender, Bartosz Salamon.
A win in the last league game of the season, against Górnik, would help the fans trust that the team is heading in the right direction and improve the atmosphere. As a result, the players would be able to start the pre-season preparations with clear heads and fully focus on achieving what they failed to in the 2020/2021 campaign.
