On Sunday Lech’s symbolic locomotive which has recently been placed by INEA Stadium will be officially presented to the fans. The country’s heaviest puffer has a few characteristics that make it stand out from other post-war locomotives.
Ty51 series locomotives are the heaviest among its freight equivalents. The puffers were produced with an aim to transport 2500 ton weights on elevations not bigger than 0.8%. The locomotives were mostly utilised on busy freight railway routes.
The locomotives were produced in the years 1953-1958 242, most of them for the industry usage and Polish National Railways (PKP). American Ty246 puffers were the exemplary models for the Polish engineers. Until the end of the 1960s Ty51 locomotives were mainly used in heavy freight transport, but sometimes they were attached to two-carriage passenger trains. The locomotives were withdrawn from the main railway routes, since its 21-ton pressure on the tracks indisposed them to travel on secondary routes which were characterized by lower intensity and speed. At the beginning of the 80s about 75% of the Ty51 puffers were no longer used.
The mass of an empty locomotive is truly impressive – 100,3 ton weights the locomotive itself and 31,5 ton weigths the tender. The propulsive wheels have a 1,45 meter diameter, and the dynamic rolling wheels’ diameter mesures 0,85 meter. The locomotive itself is 23,025 meter long (without the tender, 14,086 meter). In addition, the puffer is 4,648 meter high. The impressive size of the locomotive will be witnessed by the fans during the official presentation before the Sunday match with Wisla Cracow.
