On Wednesday evening, Michał Skóraś made his debut appearance in a World Cup match, against Argentina (0:2). The Lech Poznań winger came in at the beginning of the second half. Meanwhile Poland, as a result of a better goal difference, went through to the knockout stage.
This has been the 22-year-old’s best season of his career. In the 30 matches that the winger played in the 2022/2023 campaign so far, he scored 10 times and got 3 assists. Skóraś’s performance in the Europa Conference League has been even more impressive – not only has he found the back of the net 6 times, but 3 of those goals were against Villarreal CF. The young homegrown player also beat Dinamo Batumi (twice) and Austria Wien in the European competition.
Our winger’s great form has also been acknowledged by the national team coach, Czesław Michniewicz, who called in Skóraś for the ongoing World Cup in Qatar. Poland’s first two group matches – against Mexico and Saudi Arabia – Skóraś watched from the bench. However, on Wednesday, November 30th, Lech’s winger made his official World Cup debut against Argentina. Skóraś replaced Przemysław Frankowski on the pitch in the 46th minute.
The red-and-white team conceded two goals in the second half and, therefore, their promotion to the knockout stage was dependent on the score of the second match of group C – the clash between Saudi Arabia and Mexico. In the end, Mexico won 1:2 which put the Poles through to the knockout stage (as a result of a better goal difference) for the first time in 36 years.
