Robert Gumny leaves Lech

Lech's homegrown defender Robert Gumny will no longer compete for the club from Poznań. The 22-year-old successfully passed medical tests and signed a contract with the Bundesliga club FC Augsburg.

Robert Gumny is a prime example of a player that climbed up the ranks of Lech’s Academy. First, the defender competed for youth teams, then he debuted for the senior squad and became a key figure. The Poznań-born youngster, who has been a big fan of Lech since childhood, made his first appearance for the A team shortly before his 18th birthday when Urban let him play against Legia Warsaw at home. It was back in March 19th 2016, just when the club from Poznań was celebrating its 94th anniversary.

Since then, Gumny appeared in 97 official games for his home club and he spent half of the 2016/2017 season on loan to Podbeskidzie Bielsko-Biała. Together with Lech, the defender won Polish Super Cup and three league medals, including the most recent vice-championship title.

Gumny would have had many more club caps on his account if it wasn’t for two unfortunate knee injuries that forced him to pause for a long time. However, both times the defender returned determined and strong, and instantly became a key figure in the squad. Now ‘Guma’ will continue his professional career at the Bundesliga cub FC Augsburg, alongside another Pole, Rafał Gikiewicz.

“Robert has been a very important player to Lech for a few seasons now but seeing the progress he has been making, we didn’t have doubts that it was the right time for him to make a move. Gumny is ready to take another step in his career and the plan that Augsburg has prepared for him not only looks interesting, but will help him reach another level which is very important to us. We wish Robert all the best and we are hoping that our paths will cross again in the future,” emphasised Tomasz Rząsa, Lech’s Sporting Director.

Robert, thank you for everything! We will keep our fingers crossed for you, good luck!
