Lech Poznań failed to win two league matches in a row and was hoping that the away clash with Raków Częstochowa would end this series. However, instead, on Sunday Mariusz Rumak’s squad suffered a painful loss as the hosts triumphed 4:0.
Both teams were eliminated from the Fortuna Polish Cup quarterfinals just a few days earlier, which impacted their approach to the Sunday league clash. Lech was irritated after losing to Pogoń Szczecin following extra time, whereas Raków was defeated by Piast Gliwice 0:3. For one of the teams, the Sunday game would most likely bring a much-needed positive boost.
The hosts were in control of the match since the first whistle. Raków seemed to have caught Lech off guard with their high pressing and Rumak’s squad visibly struggled on the pitch. The scoreboard reflected Lech’s inability to deal with the opponent’s tactics – before the referee announced halftime, Raków’s players had already found the back of the net three times. Bartosz Nowak opened the goal scorers’ sheet with a beautiful goal from a free kick and Gustav Berggren added a brace. The second half didn’t look much differently from the first 45 minutes and Raków even managed to set the score to 4:0 – this time, an unfortunate intervention from Bartosz Mrozek resulted in an own-goal. The squad led by Rumak had one good goal-scoring opportunity when Filip Szymczak had an open goal, but the young striker’s shot was off-target. The painful defeat cost Lech the third rank in the PKO BP Ekstraklasa table.
