Lech Poznań was eliminated from the Polish Cup on Wednesday evening. Pogoń Szczecin beat the side from Poznań 3:0 in the round of 16, despite playing in 10 men following a red card for Frączczak.
The hosts dominated the match since the opening minutes. In the 7th minute they could have taken the lead. Dwali came close to scoring after he received a good cross from the corner of the pitch, but his attempt was slightly off target. Lech responded with a header from Jóźwiak, but it was saved by Załuska.
Lech tried surprising Pogoń with quick offensive actions, but they lacked accuracy and were unproblematic for the hosts to stop. Meanwhile, Pogoń seemed closer and closer to scoring. In the 21st minute Drygas was left unmarked and raced towards the box. The midfielder had enough space to score, but he decided to pass to Formella. Unfortunately for Pogoń, the latter’s shot flew above the crossbar. 6 minutes later Vujadinovic converted Majewski’s pass into a header, but it was easily stopped by the keeper.
The further into the match, the more Pogoń dominated. In the 30th minute Guyrsco had a one-on-one clash with Buric, but his shot was off target. 7 minutes Pogoń finally beat Lech’s defensive line. Burić tried to clear the threat, but instead he passed to Kort and the latter passed Burić and placed the ball in the back of the net. Shortly afterward the goalkeeper fouled Formella in the box and Frączczak converted the penalty kick into a goal.
Lech had a very difficult task in the second half. They needed to score quickly, but unlike their rival, they struggled to build a good offensive action. Lech found it problematic to even fire a shot. Meanwhile, Pogoń was in possession of the ball for the majority of the time and was determined to score another goal. The first quarter of the second half was marked by Lech’s numerous, desperate interventions in the defense.
Lech’s players had no idea how to surprise Pogoń. Jóźwiak’s and Makuszewski’s individual runs were not enough to bring back hope. The players from Poznan repeatedly crossed the ball into the box where Gytkjaer was waiting, but he was alone in the penalty area and surrounded by numerous defenders. Dilaver’s shot from the 69th minute had no right to surprise Załuska either.
Bjelica sent in Barkroth and Nicki Bille for the last 20 minutes of the match. The coach also moved Makuszewski deeper into the defensive line, while Dilaver was positioned in the midfield. However, that had no impact on the match and shortly afterward Lech conceded the third goal. Kort converted Formella’s cross into a goal and set the final score to 3:0. In the 85th minute Pogoń lost a player after Frączczak received a second yellow card, but that did not alter the closing minutes of the match.
