Lech drew in the first league match of the season. Tomczyk scored a late equalizer in the away clash with Piast Gliwice, securing a valuable point for the team from Poznan.
The opening minutes belonged to Lech Poznan, but it was Piast that was more effective. Within 7 minutes of the referee’s first whistle, the hosts took the lead – Valencia crossed the ball into the box and Felix successfully redirected the ball into the back of the net. Lech quickly got back to work and started attacking at a higher intensity. In the 14th minute, Jevtic crossed the ball into the penalty area where Crnomarkovic was positioned and the latter converted the pass into a header; unluckily for Lech, the ball stopped on the post.
Apart from set pieces, Zuraw’s players tried surprising Piast’s keeper with shots from outside the box. Jevtic’s attempt was stopped by the goalkeeper, whereas Amaral’s shot was off target. In the last 15 minutes of the first half, Piast took control of the game. Lech’s midfielders made numerous errors, creating spaces for their opponent. However, the hosts’ shots were either off target or easy to stop, hence the score remained unchanged until halftime.
In the 53rd minute, Lech attacked dangerously once again. Jozwiak received a pass just outside of the box, rushed into the penalty area and fired a shot that was stopped by the keeper at the very last moment. Shortly afterwards, Piast responded with Sokolowski’s individual run. The midfielder dribbled past Lech’s defensive line and sent the ball flying in the direction of the ball. Crnomarkovic intercepted the shot, but Parzyszek quickly recovered the ball and forced van der Hart to intervene.
It wasn’t until the 62nd minute that the two teams attacked again. Lech built an impressive counterattack led by Tiba and Puchacz. Unfortunately for the team from Poznan, the latter’s shot was effortlessly stopped by Plach. From 76th minute onwards, Piast had one man less – in a one-on-one clash between Jozwiak and Plach, the latter made an error and fouled his rival which forced the referee to show a red card. Lech was given a free kick which Jevtic converted into a shot; the attempt was successfully blocked by Piast’s defensive line.
The one-man advantage gave wings to Lech. Finally, in the 81st minute, their attempts provided desirable results – Tomczyk beat Piast’s keeper in a one-on-one clash following an outstanding pass from Jevtic. However, since neither of the teams managed to score again, the two sides had to share points in the first league match of the season.
