In the last league match of the season, Lech Poznan was beaten by Piast Gliwice 0:1. The three points helped the hosts secure the Championship title.
The players from Poznan were the first ones to attack on Sunday afternoon. Jevtic spotted Kostevych and sent him a precise, well-timed pass behind the backs of the defenders, but the latter’s cross along the goal line was intercepted by one of Piast’s defenders. Wasilewski had a similar opportunity to change the score, yet once again, the hosts’ defensive line made no mistake. Piast responded with a counterattack that was finished off by Felix. Unluckily for the hosts, his shot was too weak to cause problems to Putnocky.
After a long while of no goal-scoring opportunities and numerous direct clashes in the midfield, Piast regained control. Felix tried to surprise Lech’s keeper once again, but his second attempt was equally easy for Putnocky to save. However, it didn’t take long for Piast to score. The misunderstanding between Putnocky and Janicki resulted in Parzyszek intercepting the ball and placing it in the back of the unguarded net. Lech quickly recovered and went back to attacking. Gajos attempted to surprise Piast’s goalkeeper with a shot from outside the box, however, Szmatula confidently caught the ball. The team from Poznan got another chance to equalize shortly afterwards when Jevtic converted a free kick into a precise cross, but Vujadinovic’s header stopped on the post.
The guests were awarded another free-kick a few moments later. This time Jevtic took a direct attempt at the goal. However, once again Piast’s keeper intervened without a mistake. Lech continued putting pressure on the hosts’ defensive line in the closing minutes of the second half, but neither Vujadinovic nor Janicki managed to get an equalizer for their team.
Lech’s attacks continued in the second half of the match, but the lack of accuracy meant that Piast had an easier task of guarding their goal. Most of Lech’s goal-scoring opportunities came from set pieces, mainly corner kicks, a majority of which reached the tallest players such as Vujadinovic or Kolodziej. Kostevych had a chance to equalize too, but his shot was off target, and so was Jozwiak’s header that followed.
In the last minutes of the match, Zuraw’s squad continued dominating on the pitch but possession of the ball did not have an effect on the score. In the added time, Piast had one last chance to set the score to 2:0 when Jodlowiec came one-on-one with Putnocky, but the goalkeeper won the direct clash. Therefore, Piast collected 3 points and was crowned 2018/2019 Champions of Ekstraklasa.
