Piast Gliwice - Lech Poznań 0:3

In the 22nd league clash of the season, Lech Poznan faced Piast Gliwice. The team from Poznan won 3:0 thanks to goals from Majewski and Kownacki. The three points allowed Lech to remain on the fourth rank in the league table.

The match began well for the hosts who fired the first goal on target less than a minute after the referee’s first whistle. However, the attempt did not surprise Buric. 10 minutes later Jankowski was left unmarked in Lech’s box, but his shot was off target. A couple of minutes later Mraz attempted to place the ball in the net with a good, accurate shot, but the Bosnian keeper redirected the ball towards the corner kick.

It took Lech some time to get into the offensive rhythm, but when they did, Piast had trouble stopping the team from Poznan. In the 20th minute, Kostevych sent a cross to Gajos and the later attempted to head the ball into the back of the net, but his shot was blocked at the last moment by one of Piast’s defending players. 2 minutes later the hosts’ goalkeeper was forced to intervene following an attempt from Makuszewski. Lech’s offensive line kept on pressing and therefore Piast’s goalkeeper was constantly busy.

It didn’t take long for Lech to finally succeed and score. Majewski was fouled right outside the box and he converted the free kick into a goal. However, the ball first hit Sekulski’s head before rolling into the back of the net. Piast responded with a good offensive action, but it was Lech that scored a goal shortly afterwards. This time Kostevych sent a well-timed cross into the box, right onto Majewski’s head and the latter sent the ball past the helpless goalkeeper and into the back of the net.

Piast’s players were determined to catch up in the second half and the hosts’ coach decided to send Sasa Zivec in. However, the substitution did not alter the game the way the coach hoped it would and instead Lech kept on creating scoring chances. One of Lech’s counterattacks, led by Majewski, ended with Pawlowski dribbling between the defenders in the box. The winger was eventually stopped, but it wasn’t the end of problems for Piast’s defensive line. Kostevych fired a shot at the goal a moment afterwards. Nevertheless, his attempt was off target and so was Kownacki’s shot from a couple of minutes later.

In the 62nd minute, Lech set the final score. Pawlowski’s individual run ended with the winger firing a shot that caused the goalkeeper problems. Szmatula failed to catch the ball and Kownacki was already waiting to tap the ball into the net. It was the youngster’s 7th goal this season. The forward could have added another one to his account 7 minutes later, but this time the ball stopped on the post.

In the closing minutes, Lech focused on securing the score by concentrating on the defensive. However, the guests remained waiting for opportunities to counterattack as well. In the 79th minute, Makuszewski finished off a team action with a brilliant dribble and a hot that, unfortunately for Lech, was off target. Meanwhile, Piast struggled to build a good offensive action. Lech benefited from its rival’s weakness and created goal scoring chances. However, none of the scoring opportunities in the closing minutes was converted into a goal and the final score was three-nil for Lech.
