On Friday, Lech Poznań played their pre-last match of 2024. The fans gathered in Gliwice saw no goals and the two teams were forced to share league points.
Niels Frederiksen’s last two games of the year are away clashes, both played in Silesia. First, the players from Poznań travelled to Gliwice. It’s been nearly a month since Lech’s last away game, against Puszcza Niepołomice, which ended in a surprising win for the hosts (2:0). The goal for the Friday game was to win three points and put additional pressure on Raków and Jagiellonia who are behind Lech in the league table.
The hosts approached the game with high ambitions and despite the absence of their captain, Jakub Czerwiński, they made life hard for Lech Poznań. Piast focused mainly on counterattacks and created a few goal-scoring opportunities that forced Bartosz Mrozek to intervene. Meanwhile, Lech struggled to get past Piast’s defensive line and in the first half, they failed to fire a single shot on target. The second half looked similar to the first 45 minutes. Finally, Lech created a goal-scoring chance – Afonso Sousa opted for an individual run and Joel Pereira finished the effort with a shot which was successfully stopped by Frantisek Plach. The fans gathered in Gliwice didn’t see any goals and the two teams shared league points. As a result, Lech’s advantage over the other teams in the PKO BP Ekstraklasa table decreased to three points.
