For the first time in 5 years, Lech Poznań kicked off the PKO BP Ekstraklasa season with a win. In the first match of the 2023/2024 campaign, John van den Brom’s squad defeated Piast Gliwice 2:1.
The first half didn’t forecast Lech’s win. Despite dominating for most of the game, it was Piast that scored first. Patryk Dziczek converted a penalty kick into a goal for the hosts and Piast was heading off for the break with an advantage.
Lech’s response in the second half was excellent. Shortly after the referee resumed the second half, it was already 1:1 thanks to a beautiful, precise shot from Filip Marchwiński. Lech didn’t stop there – not long later, Kristoffer Velde sent an impressive long ball to Marchwiński and the young striker redirected it into the back of the net with a header. As a result, Lech turned the tables and managed to hold onto the lead until the final whistle, despite Piast’s multiple good goal-scoring opportunities towards the end of the match.
Now Lech is preparing for the upcoming clash with Żalgiris Kaunas. On Thursday, at 8:30 pm, John van den Brom and his squad will face the Lithuanian side at home, in the second qualifying round of Europa Conference League.
