In the 24th round of PKO BP Ekstraklasa, Lech drew 1:1 against Piast Gliwice. Nika Kvekveskiri scored the only goal for the team from Poznań, shortly before the finish time.
Lech’s squad was in good spirits prior to the Sunday league clash with Piast. Just a week earlier, they defeated confidently Lechia Gdańsk, and on Thursday, they won against Djurgårdens IF in the first leg of the UECL round of 8.
Coach John van den Brom made 7 changes in the squad compared to the Europa Conference League clash. Lubomir Šatka and Barry Douglas appeared in the starting line-up for the first time in a while, having been injured. Radosław Murawski also returned to the first eleven after receiving a red card in one of the recent league games.
The first half did not provide any goals, nor was it abundant in goal-scoring opportunities. The state of the pitch could have been one of the reasons why the first half wasn’t an attractive one – the turf was in a very bad condition. Filip Marchwiński came the closest to scoring early in the game when he received a great parallel pass from Mikael Ishak, but Filip’s shot was off-target. In addition, Michał Skóraś received a yellow card – his fifth this season – in the first half of the Sunday match which means he will miss the next PKO BP Ekstraklasa game.
The fans gathered in Gliwice did end up seeing two goals, both scored in the second half. The hosts were the first ones to change the score. Joao Amaral fouled one of Piast’s players inside Lech’s box and the referee awarded a penalty kick to the hosts. Patryk Dziczek’s shot was stopped by Filip Bednarek, and so was the follow-up attempt, but when Michał Chrapek ended up firing another shot at Bednarek’s goal, the keeper was helpless.
Lech immediately got back to work and looked for a chance to equalize. Finally, in the added time, Nika Kvekveskiri found space in front of Piast’s box and fired a strong shot at the goal which František Plach had no chance of stopping. It was Georgian’s fourth league goal and all four he scored from outside the box.
It was Lech’s 7th draw of the season. With 40 league points in their account, Lech is currently ranked 3rd. On Thursday, March 16th (6:45 pm), the Poznań team will play the second leg of the UECL round of 8, against Djurgårdens IF.
