Lech triumphed in the semifinals of the Fortuna Polish Cup, once again keeping a clean sheet. The team from Poznań beat Olimpia Grudziądz 3:0 and is going to play in the final, on May 2nd, against Raków Częstochowa.
Lech managed to keep a clean sheet in every game all the way to the semifinals, hence one of the objectives was to uphold this impressive statistic, especially since their rival was a fourth-division side - Olimpia Grudziądz.
The difference in the professional level between the two teams was evident from the start to the finish. Coach Maciej Skorża sent in his best starting line-up for the semifinal clash, therefore the fourth-division opponent didn’t have much of a chance. The team from Poznań remained in possession of the ball for most of the time – 75%, to be exact – and whenever they picked up the pace, Olimpia’s defensive line was in trouble.
However, it wasn’t a counterattack that resulted in the first goal for Lech, but a set piece. Barry Douglas crossed the ball from the corner of the pitch into the box where Dawid Kownacki was waiting. The forward tried heading the ball into the net but in the end, it wasn’t his name that appeared on the goal scorers’ sheet – it was one of Olimpia’s defenders that accidentally scored an own goal.
Following halftime, the above-mentioned Lech Poznań defender became the star of the show. Barry, within 10 minutes, beat Olimpia’s goalkeeper twice. In both cases, Joel Pereira set him up with a perfect pass.
Lech could have scored another goal towards the end of the game when Kristoffer Velde appeared on the pitch, but his shot from outside the box hit the woodwork.
And so, it was Lech that won a spot in the final of the Fortuna Polish Cup. On May 2nd, the team from Poznań is going to face Raków Częstochowa at PGE National Stadium in Warsaw.
