Lech’s clash with Legia Warsaw was the hit of Lotto Ekstraklasa 13th round. The hosts won with Lech Poznan 2:1 and Kasper Hamalainen scored the winner in the injury time.
The first half cannot be described as exhilarating. Both teams played cautious football, focusing on solid defending. That resulted in a few goal-scoring opportunity only. Makuszewski was the first one to decide for an individual action and fire a shot, but his attempt wasn’t on target. Pawlowski tried a few minutes later, but his shot was easy to save for the goalkeeper.
The team from Warsaw had a few chances to score too. In the 21st minute Warsaw’s forward Nikolic attempted to surprise Putnocky, but his shot wasn’t on target. On the other end of the pitch, Makuszewski and Pawlowski were active in the offensive and built a decent action, but Dabrowski cut the final pass.
In the 35th minute Lech led a counterattack. Pawlowski passed the ball to the right flank where Makuszewski was waiting, the latter sent a cross into the penalty area, but one of the defenders intersected the pass just in time. 4 minutes later Nikolic had a great opportunity to score when he dribbled past Putnocky, but somehow the striker sent the ball flying above the crossbar.
Shortly after the referee resumed the play, Legia’s Hungarian striker received a great cross from Guilherme, but this time Putnocky intervened without an error. Meanwhile, Makuszewski who was actively running down the right flank got a good cross from Tetteh, raced towards the midfielder and fired a shot. The goalkeeper stopped the ball from falling into the net, but failed to catch and Gajos attempted to score too, but his try wasn’t on target.
As the minutes passed, both teams focused on the offensive, which gradually resulted in more and more goal-scoring opportunities. Nielsen could have scored a goal for the team from Poznan when he slid in to redirect Gajos’ cross into the goal, but the ball rolled a few centimetres next to the post. Shortly afterwards, the goalkeeper from Poznan was forced to intervene when Nikolic fired a shot at his goal. The next time the Hungarian got a good chance to score, he succeeded. The forward was one-against-one with the goalkeeper and placed the ball in the net, even though Putnocky nearly managed to redirect the shot.
The team from Poznan had one aim: to equalize. Robak had a couple of good chances to score, but his attempts were either not on target, or effectively stopped by Legia’s defensive line. However, when Kopczynski fouled Makuszewski in the penalty area and Lech was awarded a penalty kick, Robak finally managed to place the ball in the net.
Nevertheless, it wasn’t the end of the match. Just when the match was about to finish, Hamalainen scored the second goal for Legia, setting the final score to 2:1 and Legia had a good reason to celebrate.
