In the 9th round of PKO BP Ekstraklasa, Lech Poznań faced Stal Mielec. Both teams won their previous games – the hosts triumphed against Warta Poznań (2:0), whereas Stal defeated Zagłębie Lubin (4:2). In the Saturday match at Bułgarska Street, it was John van den Brom’s squad that turned out to be better and ended up winning 2:1.
Similarly to the previous game, Lech’s Dutch coach opted for a formation with three defenders. However, the coaching staff was forced to adapt their strategy first when Dino Hotic suffered an injury, and then when Lech conceded a goal. Stal led a counterattack which Maciej Domański converted into a goal thanks to a good pass from Ilja Szkurin.
John van den Brom quickly made changes in the formation which immediately resulted in an equalizer. The duo Filip Marchwiński – Kristoffer Velde were responsible for the first goal, with the latter converting the opportunity into an equalizer. Not long later, Marchwiński also celebrated a goal of his own.
In the second half, Lech visibly dominated on the pitch, but their control of the game didn’t result in goal-scoring opportunities. Finally, towards the end of the match, Lech started causing more problems to Stal’s defensive line but Afonso Sousa’s and Kristoffer Velde’s attempts were off target, hence the game ended with a 2:1 win for the hosts. The triumph enabled Lech to jump to the 6th position in the PKO BP Ekstraklasa table.
