Lech Poznań kicked off the season with a goalless draw against Sandecja, the Ekstraklasa newcomers. The score resembles last season’s first clash when the team from Poznań drew with Śląsk Wrocław.
The opening minutes of the match were marked by a slow tempo. Lech had an advantage since the first whistle and the hosts didn’t let the newcomers cause problems. The team from Poznan had the first chance to score in the 17th minute. Gajos crossed the ball into the box where Situm was waiting. The new footballer passed the ball to Majewski with his chest and the latter sent a volley in the direction of the ball. However, Gliwa stopped the ball from falling into the back of the net.
As the minutes passed, Sandecja’s players started to feel more comfortable and became problematic to Lech’s defensive line. Four of the players who wore Sandecja’s shirt have never played in Ekstraklasa before. However, among the newcomers there were also a couple of experienced footballers, among them Cetnarski and Brzyski. In the 31st minute Sandecja had a chance to score. Danek was left unmarked in Lech’s box but his shot was far off target. Lech responded with an attempt from Situm, but it was equally imprecise.
A lot happened in the closing minutes of the first half. Gajos’s dangerous cross from a corner kick was successfully stopped by Gliwa. Meanwhile, on the other end of the pitch Dilaver came close to scoring… an own goal, but Buric managed to stop the ball before it fell into the back of Lech’s net. Shortly afterwards Majewski had a good scoring chance but his second attempt was saved by the keeper too.
3 minutes into the second half and Lech got another opportunity to score. Makuszewski’s cross into the box reached Situm, however, the latter’s header was off target. A moment later Makuszewski could have scored, but his attempt was successfully stopped by the keeper yet again. Nicki Bille’s shot from the 52nd minute would have fallen into the back of the net, but one of the defenders changed the path of the ball at the last moment.
Lech remained in possession of the ball for the majority of the time, but Sandecja was determined to win too. Korzym came on the pitch and brought fresh energy to the guests’ offensive line. He was the one who passed to Trochim, but the latter’s shot turned out to be easy for Buric to save. A couple of minutes later Radut’s shot from a free kick flew above the crossbar.
The last few minutes of the match were marked by Lech’s absolute domination. Nevertheless, Bjelica’s players struggled to beat Sandecja’s defensive line neither could they fire a shot on target. Set pieces were the only hope for the hosts, but their rivals were skilled in marking and made the task very hard. Gytkjaer’s attempt from the injury time was saved by Sandecja’s goalkeeper too and, therefore, the teams had to share the points.
