Lech Poznan is just a step away from the third consecutive Polish Cup final. In the first leg of the semi-finals, the team from Poznan won 3:0 with Pogon Szczecin. Szymon Pawlowski, Dawid Kownacki and Lasse Nielsen scored the goals on Wednesday evening.
Kownacki was the first player to call his teammates into the offensive. The forward decided to cross the ball into the box, being very close to the penalty area, and what was supposed to be a pass, due to the rotation of the ball turned into a shot that stopped on the crossbar. Shortly afterwards Gajos had a good opportunity to score following a well-played free kick. However, his attempt was off target.
It took Pogon a dozen or so minutes to wake up and start causing problems to Lech’s defensive line. However, the hosts successfully stopped Pogon’s counterattacks. Despite that, the team from the seaside had a couple goal scoring chances. Cincadze’s shot from outside the box was blocked by Kostevych. A moment later Gyursco attempted to surprise Buric, but the Bosnian keeper saved the shot.
Nevertheless, Lech was the team that clearly dominated the game. The hosts often enclosed their rival in the box and looked for opportunities to score. Tralka’s attempt was successfully stopped by Pogon’s keeper, but the player was helpless a couple of minutes later when Pawlowski received a brilliant pass from Jevtic, dribbled past Rapa and placed the ball in the net.
Lech kept on having chances to score in the second half as well. Shortly after the restart of the game, Pawlowski was left unmarked and he raced into the box and fired a shot that at last turned out to be too weak to cause problems to the goalkeeper. However, the winger did not waste the next opportunity that came along. A couple of minutes later he showed his dribbling abilities and sent a well-timed pass to Kownacki who redirected the ball into the back of the net.
Lech was aware that they needed to keep on pressing in order to secure their place in the Polish Cup final and, therefore, the hosts remained focused on the offensive. Pogon was helplessly surrounded in its box. In the 60th minute, Jevtic’s shot caused problems to the goalkeeper who barely stopped the ball from rolling into the net. However, shortly afterwards Slowik couldn’t save his team from conceding a goal. Majewski’s cross from a corner kick was converted into a header by Nielsen.
The third goal did not alter Lech’s tactics. In the 74th minute, Makuszewski’s sent a great pass in between Pogon’s four player and to Kedziora who was about to race into the box. However, the defender was blocked by the goalkeeper at the last moment. Pogon struggled to pose a threat to their rival and even if the guests managed to move the ball towards Lech’s penalty area, the hosts’ defensive line, with Buric playing the main role, made no errors and successfully stopped all their offensive actions. Meanwhile, Lech kept on searching for the fourth goal. Despite having a couple more goal scoring chances, the final score remained a three-nil win for Lech, for the fourth time in a row.
