Lech Poznań - Pogoń Szczecin
Lech Poznań is in the middle of a series of difficult matches. After facing the second team in the PKO BP Ekstraklasa table, Mariusz Rumak’s squad competed in the quarterfinals of the Fortuna Polish Cup against Pogoń Szczecin. The dramatic clash at Bułgarska Street ended with Lech losing 0:1 to the team from the seaside.
After a good start to 2024, Mariusz Rumak’s team had to face Pogoń who won the last three games. The clash between the two sides was predicted to be the most exhilarating game of the Fortuna Polish Cup quarterfinals. Both teams were aware of each other’s strengths, hence the beginning of the match was rather uneventful as Lech and Pogoń stayed equally carefully. It was the team from Szczecin that had the best goal-scoring opportunity of the first half – Kamil Grosicki received a long ball and came one-on-one with Lech’s keeper, but the winger’s shot ended up being off-target.
In the second half, the guests sat low on the pitch and awaited Lech’s moves. Kristoffer Velde came close to changing the score when he fired his trademark shot at Pogoń’s goal, but Valentin Cojocaru managed to stop the ball from hitting the back of the net. The team from the seaside didn’t concede a goal despite Lech’s intense offensive efforts, hence the match proceeded to extra time. The game didn’t look much different in the following period – the hosts were in control of the match for the majority of the time but failed to get past Pogoń’s defensive line. Just when it seemed that the fans gathered at Bułgarska Street would witness a penalty shootout, the team from the seaside turned the tables. Joao Gamboy was Pogoń’s hero as he placed the ball in the back of the net in the 119th minute and put his team through to the semifinals of the Fortuna Polish Cup.
