Lech Poznan beat Gornik Zabrze 3:1 in the last game of the main phase of the season. Jozwiak, Tralka, and Majewski scored the goals for the team from Poznan which, after Jagiellonia lost their match, put Lech in the 1st rank ahead of the playoffs.
The Saturday clash was delayed 15 minutes due to the serpentines being thrown on the pitch by the fans as a part of the national protest. Since matches across the whole country had to begin later than planned, it did not affect the simultaneous broadcast of all Ekstraklasa league games. It wasn’t until the 24th minute that Lech got their first scoring chance. Gajos’s attempt was on target, but it was easily stopped by the keeper.
Lech came close to scoring again in the 40th minute when the hosts were given a throw-in and Tralka’s header was intercepted by Klups. The youngster’s shot hit the post and was stopped by one of the defenders who was standing on the goal line. 6 minutes later the score changed for the first time that Saturday evening. Gajos sent a well-timed pass to Jozwiak who had lots of space and the young midfielder raced into the box and beat the keeper with a precise shot.
The referee added extra 16 minutes to the first half during which Lech had a couple more goal-scoring chances. Jozwiak was active in the offense and one of his individual runs nearly ended with a goal, but the referee stopped the action. Gornik responded with a shot from Kadzior which was stopped by Putnocky.
After halftime, Lech continued dominating the match and initiated the second part of the game with Kostevych’s shot. Klups had another good scoring chance but this time the goalkeeper intervened without an error. Gornik responded in the 53rd minute with Kadzior’s attempt which was blocked by Lech’s defensive line.
The guests managed to move the game away from their penalty box, but they struggled to convert the possession into goal scoring chances. However, that provided Lech with opportunities to counterattack. The hosts’ attempts were ineffective due to the lack of precision. During one of Lech’s offensive actions, Majewski was left with lots of space but Klups’s pass was inaccurate and intercepted. In the 74th minute, Lech was in trouble. Barkroth’s handball resulted in a penalty kick for Gornik which Kadzior easily converted into an equalizer.
Lech had nothing to lose and Bjelica decided to change the formation and send in a second striker. The hosts intensified their offensive actions, causing problems to Gornik’s defensive line. For instance, Loska barely managed to redirect the ball above the crossbar following an attempt from Kostevych. In the 81st minute, Lech finally succeeded and took the lead again. Tralka received a cross from Majewski and without any hesitation, the defensive midfielder fired a shot into the back of the net. In the 88th minute, Khoblenko could have added the third goal, but his attempt was slightly off target. Majewski set the final score to 3:1 in the injury time with an individual run and a great finish from outside the box.
