The 2022/2023 league season isn’t going as planned for Lech Poznań. Following the loss in the first match, against Stal Mielec (0:2), the team has once again failed to beat their opponent – Wisła Płock triumphed at Bułgarska Street 3:1.
This is not how Lech imagined their season would unfold. Not long ago, the team from Poznań beat Dinamo Batumi 6:1 on aggregate and advanced to the third round of Europa Conference League qualifiers. But on the national arena, John van den Brom’s players are struggling. Even though it was common knowledge that Wisła Płock has in great form, there was no doubt that Lech is going to be the stronger side and shouldn’t have problems defeating their opponent.
However, the match did not prove so whatsoever. The first half was rather mundane, with neither of the sides showing what they were truly capable of until in the 45th minute Wisła surprised everyone when Kristian Vallo converted a pass from Rafał Wolski into the first goal of the night.
Shortly after halftime, the team from Płock was already ahead by two goals. This time, Wolski added his name to the goal scorers’ list with a precise shot from outside the box. Lech immediately got back to work and intensified their offensive attempts. The substitutions made by Joh van den Brom helped the hosts put pressure on their opponent. In the 69th minute, Michał Skóraś scored a goal for Lech – the only one that night. The squad from Poznań had a few good goal-scoring opportunities later on, including a perfect chance to equalize when Kristoffer Velde came one-on-one with the keeper, but the young striker failed to beat Gradecki.
In the 89th minute, Wisła deprived Lech of hope when Marko Kolar, who just came in from the bench, scored the third goal. As a result, Wisła triumphed at Bułgarska street for the first time in the club’s history.
Now Lech needs to bounce back quickly – on Tuesday, John van den Brom and his players will travel to Iceland where on Thursday, they will face Vikingur Reykjavik in the third qualifying round of the Europa Conference League.
