What an exhilarating way to end the year. Lech Poznań delivered a thrilling performance on Sunday night and managed to beat Górnik Zabrze in the added time, finishing off 2021 with a win that secured their position at the top of the league table.
As expected, the hosts controlled the match and stayed in possession of the ball for most of the time, but they lacked the precision and efficiency to convert their chances into goals. Meanwhile, Górnik didn’t have many goal-scoring opportunities but their conversion rate was much better and just before halftime, the team from Zabrze found the back of the net. Jesus Jimenez was the one who turned an impressive team effort into a goal.
Just when it seemed that the first half would end with a one-goal lead for the guests, Nika Kvekveskiri took the matter into his own hands and equalized with a strong shot from outside the box which left the goalkeeper helpless.
The second half was more balanced with both sides having multiple chances to score. Sometimes it was Lech that attacked more intensively, whereas other times Górnik caused problems to their opponent’s defensive line. The team from Zabrze could have easily scored at least another goal, however, it was either the woodwork or Filip Bednarek’s remarkable interventions that stopped them from placing the ball in the back of the net.
The decisive blow came in the 99th minute. The referee added extra 13 minutes to the game resulting from numerous breaks – including the referee’s injury. Late in the added time, Lech beat Górnik’s defensive line for the second time that night thanks to Antonio Milic’s follow-up shot which set the score to 2:1.
Thanks to the additional three points, Lech secured their position at the top of the league table with a 4-point advantage over Pogoń Szczecin. Now the players from Poznań will begin the holiday break which will last until the beginning of January when they resume training sessions again.
