Lech’s 8-game run without a loss came to an end. In the 9th round of PKO BP Ekstraklasa, the team from Poznań lost to Jagiellonia Białystok 0:1, however, they managed to hold onto the leader’s position.
Lech got their first goal-scoring opportunity in the 14th minute when Joao Amaral fired a strong shot from outside the box. Pavels Steinbors managed to stop the attempt but he failed to catch the ball and Mikael Ishak was already waiting ready to tap the ball into the net. However, Lech’s joy lasted short as the referee signalised an offside. A few minutes later, Adriel Ba Loua wasted a great scoring chance – the offensive player from Ivory Coast received a precise long ball from Nika Kvekveskiri but his shot from the 11th meter was off target.
Shortly before halftime, Jesus Imaz could have changed the score to 1:0 for the hosts as he took advantage of miscommunication within Lech’s defensive line. Luckily for the team from Poznań, Filip Bednarek triumphed in a one-on-one clash with the Spanish forward.
In the 71st minute, Jagiellonia was more effective and finally found the back of the net. Bartosz Salamon made a costly mistake as his pass in the penalty area was imprecise and easily intercepted by Imaz who beat Bednarek with a shot into the left corner. The Spaniard’s fourth goal of the season was also the only goal of the Friday game.
Despite the defeat, Lech remains the leader of PKO BP Ekstraklasa. After 9 rounds, Lech has 18 points – one more than Śląsk Wrocław and two more than Pogoń Szczecin. The team from Poznań will play their next league game on October 2nd, at 5:30 pm against the club from Wrocław.
