Despite leading by one goal thanks to Mikael Ishak, Lech Poznań failed to beat Austria Wien and guarantee themselves a spot in the knockout stage of the Europa Conference League. The match in Vienna ended in a 1:1 draw, hence Lech’s clash with Villarreal will decide the final rank in group C.
The first half of the clash at Estadio Franz Horr wasn’t a spectacular one but the 2.5 thousand Lech Poznań fans gathered in Vienna experienced a few heart-stopping moments – when Mikael Ishak fell to the ground and signalized an injury, and then again when one of Austria’s players hit the crossbar.
Thankfully, Ishak’s injury wasn’t a serious one and not only was he able to remain on the pitch, but he also scored a crucial goal for Lech. The captain received a pass from Filip Szymczak and successfully tapped the ball into the back of the net.
Following the goal, Lech continued putting intense pressure on Austria’s defensive line, and just when it seemed that the second goal would only be a matter of time, the hosts scored an equalizer. Lech made a mistake in the defense and Can Keles exploited it perfectly.
The result hasn’t changed despite Lech having a couple of good goal-scoring chances. Shortly before the final whistle, Amaral could have been the hero of the game, but his shot flew above the crossbar.
Therefore, the final rank in group C will be decided in the last round. If Lech manages to win against Villarreal, they will guarantee themselves a spot in the knockout stage. In case of a draw, their fate will be dependent on the final score of Hapoel’s clash with Austria. A loss also gives Lech a chance to make it out of the group phase, but only if Austria wins against Hapoel Beer Sheva.
