FC Basel's recent season
With each year FC Basel goes even further on the international arena. In the previous season RotBlau became the Swiss Champion for the 6th time in a row and they went as far the round of 16 of Champions League, where the Swiss team was eliminated by FC Porto.
The foreign players are mostly responsible for the last season's successes, also being a support for the homegrown youngsters. The team's best goal scorer in season 2014/2015 was Shkelzen Gashi who found the back of the net 26 times. In addition, the 18 year-old Breel Embolo also had a big impact on Basel's results. Despite his age, the offensive player appeared in 42 matches (in all competitions), scored 17 goals and assisted 13 times.
The squad
After a very successful season, multiple changes were made in Basel's squad and that might have a big impact on this year's achievement. Urs Fischer, the former player of FC Zurich, took over the team in summer despite the lack the support of RotBlau fans who are very hostile for the club from the capital.
FCB lost three important players ahead of this season. Marco Streller, the well-known forward and an experienced captain, ended his career. Moreover, both Fabian Schar and Fabian Frei moved to Bundesliga clubs.
However, five new footballers joined Fischer's team. Michael Lang was brought to the club as a right-back and Daniel Hoegh was also meant to strengthen Basel's defense line. The Swiss club also bought two midfielders - Birkir Bjarnason and Zdravko Kuzmanovic - and a forward who used to play for Salzburg - Marc Janko.
