Lech Poznań won the second leg of the UECL quarterfinals, but ended up losing 4:6 on aggregate, and, as a result, it is ACF Fiorentina that advanced to the semifinals. Nonetheless, the Polish side has said goodbye to the European competition in good style.
In the first leg, at Bułgarska Street, ACF Fiorentina got a confident, 4:1 win. Hence, no one gave Lech Poznań a chance to turn the tables in the second match. However, to everyone’s surprise, John van den Brom’s team did exactly that. In the first half, Afonso Sousa scored a beautiful goal. Then, in the second 45 minutes, Kristoffer Velde converted a penalty kick into another goal and not long later Artur Sobiech changed the score to 3:0, causing pure ecstasy among his teammates and supporters. A 3:0 score meant extra time and a chance that Lech would make it to the semifinals.
The 2 thousand supporters gathered in Fiorentina were celebrating loudly, whereas the Italian side and their fans displayed a mix of fear and shock.
However, Fiorentina turned the tables and thanks to Riccardo Sottila’s and Gaetano Castrovilli’s goals, they won 6:4 on an aggregate and advanced to the tournament's semifinals. Still, Lech’s performance was nothing short of spectacular, therefore, the Polish side said goodbye to UECL with their heads held high.
