Lech Poznań doesn’t have many big wins on their account this season. However, on Tuesday, in the 26th round of PKO BP Ekstraklasa, the team from Poznań put an end to the series of poor performances and confidently beat Lechia Gdańsk with three goals. Lech players agree that such wins are crucial in the context of their confidence on the pitch.
The team from Poznań delivered a few good performances this season that ended with a high score, but it was at the beginning of the current campaign. The team, back then still led by Dariusz Żuraw, managed to win by three goals against FK Valmiera (3:0) and Hammarby IF (3:0), and got an impressive 5:0 win in the clash with Apollon Limassol (5:0) in Europa League qualifiers. In the league, Lech performed well against Piast Gliwice (4:1) and then the fans were forced to wait until December before their team delivered another, similar performance on the Polish pitches, this time against Podbeskidzie Bielsko-Biała (4:0).
It’s been 4 months since that match and the players have repeatedly spoken about the importance of big wins to their morales. “Until now, every game felt like a 90-minute war. We haven’t got a single confident win recently and we could really use one,” emphasised Lech’s midfielder, Jesper Karlström after a series of one-goal wins in the league (against Śląsk, Warta, and Pogoń) which, although satisfactory, were a result of blood, sweats and tears.
On Tuesday, the squad finally got a breaking point which they were awaiting so impatiently. In the home league clash with Lechia Gdańsk, the team from Poznań took the lead following a goal from Michał Skóraś. Mikael Ishak added a goal from a penalty kick and then Dani Ramirez set the final score to 3:0 following a great assist from Jakub Kamiński. The winger highlighted that it was the good organisation in the defence that was the key to the big win. “It helped us massively that we were so well organised in the defence. It’s the key to winning confidently. Our morals improve with every such win. We have four matches to go and we need to win the maximum number of points. The coach told us that if we don’t have each other backs and go that extra mile for one another, we won’t be delivering good performances, and it’s something we ought to remember,” emphasised Lech’s homegrown player.
“It’s been a while since we last got such a big win. Our morals have improved significantly as a result of the recent match and the objective now is to keep it that way. Once we got that second goal in, we stayed in possession of the ball, played patiently, and avoided rushing and making mistakes. Finally, we managed to relax whilst remaining focused,” said Michał Skóraś.
On Friday, at 8:30 pm, the team from Poznań is going to face Podbeskidzie Bielsko-Biała – currently ranked 15th in the league table – in an away league match.
