Widzew Łódź - Lech Poznań 1:1
Despite two losses in a row, Lech Poznań still had a shot at finishing the 2023/2024 season on the PKO BP Ekstraklasa podium. However, for that to happen, Mariusz Rumak’s squad needed to win the clash with Widzew Łódź. Unfortunately for the team from Poznań, the match ended in a 1:1 draw.
Mariusz Rumak’s team began the Sunday league clash well – not only did they clearly dominate on the pitch, but also caused problems for Widzew’s defensive line. Kristoffer Velde was one of the most active players on the pitch; the Norwegian winger often looked for opportunities to face his defensive opponents one-on-one. Velde was also the player who opened the scoring sheet – he left the defenders behind and converted Filip Szymczak’s great cross into the first goal. The Norwegian winger seemed motivated by the goal and less than a minute later he came close to scoring again, however, his shot from outside the box bounced off the crossbar. Quite unexpectedly, the hosts managed to equalize in the first half. Bartosz Mrozek fouled Kamil Cybulski inside the box and Imad Rondić converted the penalty kick into a goal.
In the second half, the hosts had more to say. Every once in a while, Mrozek was forced to intervene as Widzew’s players tried to surprise him with dangerous shots. The goalkeeper was crucial in stopping the opponent from scoring another goal. Not long before the final whistle, Lech had a perfect opportunity to turn the tables. However, Mikael Ishak’s header was stopped by Rafał Gikiewicz, and Kristoffer Velde’s shot flew above the crossbar. The draw means that Lech won’t finish the season on the podium and, as a result, will not compete in the international arena in the 2024/2025 campaign.
