The captain is staying at Lech Poznań! Mikael Ishak has extended his contract which will now be valid until June 30th, 2027.
The Swedish striker is the second player after Joel Pereira who decided to stay at Bułgarska Street for longer. The 31-year-old joined Lech Poznań back in the summer of 2020 and signed a 3-year contract with the Polish club. In autumn 2022, there were plenty of rumours circling regarding Ishak’s future and his likely departure from Lech. Therefore, the public was taken by surprise when the captain extended his agreement with Lech until June 2025. This time the negotiations were also kept under wraps and fortunately, they had a happy ending – on Tuesday afternoon, Mikael Ishak extended his contract for another two years.
“We are pleased to announce that another key player – our captain and a leader in the dressing room – is staying with us. Mikael Ishak signed a new contract which will last until June 30th, 2027. Mika has trusted us once again; he and his family feel great in Poznań and we are hoping that he will add new, wonderful chapters to his ongoing story with Lech,” said Tomasz Rząsa, Lech’s Sporting Director. “No one needs convincing about Mikael’s sporting value. He is a remarkable striker who works for the team and is, at the same time, very valuable in the opponent’s penalty area. Already at this moment, he is the best foreign goal scorer in Lech’s history and I am sure that his scoring statistics will further improve and help us achieve successes.”
The Swede’s adventure at Lech Poznań began with the team’s great performance in the qualifications for the European competition during which they beat Apollon Limassol 5:0 and went on to qualify for the group stage of the Europa League thanks to a 2:1 win against Charleroi. Ishak scored 8 goals in the international arena that season and ended up being the top goal scorer ex aequo with Harry Kane from Tottenham Hotspur. In the following campaign, Lech Poznań won the Polish Championship title which the Swede celebrated as the captain. Mikael played a key role in the club’s triumph – he scored 18 goals, among them the winner in the clash with Piast Gliwice (2:1) which helped Lech jump to the top of the league table just two rounds before the end of the season. In the following months, Ishak and his teammates made history by qualifying to the quarterfinals of the Europa Conference League.
Today the 31-year-old is the best goal scorer in Lech’s history. He has 77 goals in his account which puts him in the fourth position when it comes to goals scored in all competitions and in Ekstraklasa. The Swede is chasing the podium that Teodor Anioła, Piotr Reiss, and Mirosław Okoński are occupying. So far, Ishak appeared in 149 matches for Lech which means that he scores an average of 0,51 goals per game – a statistic that also puts him among the best of the best.
“I am incredibly happy and proud to remain a part of the Lech Poznań family. Numerous factors have convinced me to extend the contract, one of them being that my family and I feel great in this place. My sons play in the club’s Academy and my wife is very happy here. I am the captain of a great team which is supported by thousands of brilliant fans. There were many arguments for extending the contract with the club,” emphasized Mikael Ishak.
“I have already spent four years at Lech Poznań and they have been full of ups and downs. We played in the Europa League, then became the Polish Champions and wrote a great chapter in the Europa Conference League. We want to continue this promising project; there is plenty of work ahead of us and I think we are heading in the right direction. I hope for a bright future – full of trophies and joy for the fans – for me and the team,” highlighted Lech’s captain.
